list of things that may require a model or property release

  • Identifiable cars (when it is the main subject of the photograph)
  • Identifiable private property such as a home or a business
  • Intellectual property including brands, logos, trademarks, product designs
  • Artworks (mainly drawings, graffitis and paintings) that are not in the public domain
  • Identifiable buildings, bridges, or landmarks that are protected by a copyright
  • Brand-name products that are identifiable
  • Identifiable people (when the pictured persons can recognise themselves)

list of things that are generally ok to use commercially

  • Non-branded items and everyday objects (items or products that are generic with no branding, trademarks or logos)
  • Cityscapes (where one building is not the focus but the cityscape as a whole)
  • Buildings within the public domain (government buildings, etc) or public places
  • Artwork and Design in which the author passed away more than 70 years ago
  • Non-luxury cars made before 1985 without branding and logos on them
  • Nature: Landscapes and Wildlife
